Covenant PASSPORT's ADVENTURE Series of senior trips.
In the Moroccan desert | In October of 2009 the PASSPORT Travel Program has scheduled the first of an ADVENTURE Series of trips, in addition to the regular PASSPORT trips. How are they different? Typically (but not necessarily) the number of travelers will be fewer (12-15 travelers); the itineraries may be less structured, concentrating on a specific destination or activity; you may need to be a bit more 'in shape' (although we are not planning on swimming in 'rip tides', rappelling down cliff faces, spelunking through muddy caves, etc.); we may travel in vans instead of luxury touring coaches (and you may get to share in some driving duties); lodgings may not be 4 & 5 star hotels (although we won't be staying in 'flop houses' either); we may take over a couple of 4 BR cabins in a State Park near some interesting places and do day trips out in the vans, prepare some of our own meals, etc.
We admit up front that while our typical PASSPORT trip can accommodate someone who may need a cane, and occasionally a walker, these ADVENTURE Series trips will probably not be able to accommodate those with mobility issues. Also one of the things we promote in our regular PASSPORT Trips is that we plan the whole trip and all you have to do is make a reservation, then come and we handle the whole thing for you. The ADVENTURE Series will be more flexible, and you will have the opportunity to be more involved, making it YOUR trip, within limits.
A river/canal cruise in Holland | These trips will probably attract the 50 to 65 age group of seniors but we are certainly not going to set age limits. (We know a couple of little 75 year olds who can walk us into the ground and who are more adventuresome than some 45 year olds we know. ) These ADVENTURE travelers just may need to be a bit more physically fit, and almost surely being able to interact well with a small group will be an important skill. But the prime criteria will be someone who is looking for ADVENTURE experiences.
For example, our first domestic ADVENTURE Series trip is to New York City. It provides transportation from Knoxville to NYC; lodging at a mid-Manhattan hotel, a few meals, transportation from the airport, tickets to one Broadway Show and a City Pass coupon book which will give you pre-paid admission to 3-4 attractions which you select from a list of 20-30. You pick what you want to do while you are in the city--create your own ADVENTURE--then we get you back to Knoxville. You can sun bathe in Central Park, or spend all day at the Art Museum, or 'shop 'til you drop' on Fifth Avenue, ride the Subway or the Staten Island Ferry, take in 3 or 4 ON or OFF Broadway shows, get up at 5:00 a.m. and be in the audience of Good Morning America on TV. . . or eat all your meals in a deli in Brooklyn if you wish. It is YOUR adventure. Do whatever strikes your fancy ! ! (Note: We, Faye & 'Moe' have done everything you see on this list in NYC. . . well, I'm not sure we sunbathed in Central Park . . . but it is a great way to spend a long weekend.)
For the future we are looking at things like:
Doing Paris--just like NYC | Do the same thing we have already planned for NYC, only go to Quebec, Canada and do it; or Chicago, or Paris, France . . . (you tell us).
- Spend 3-4 days and nights at a Dude Ranch with horseback riding, chuck-wagon dinners, campfires, etc.
- Fly to Utah, rent a van, and take in 3-4 of the National Parks that are relatively close together. Hike all day, eat dinner, soak the kinks out in a hot tub, then do it again tomorrow.
- Take a 3-day float down some of the not-so-wild white-water rafting rivers, camping on sand bars, then ending up the last night in a deluxe hotel in the nearest major city with a day or two to kick back, relax, eat well, etc. before we head back home.
Aboard a sailing vessel in New England | Take on a volunteer project cleaning up after a hurricane, or a flood, or a Habitat for Humanity project for a few days, then spend a few more days being a 'tourist'. Or help restore a trail in a State Park; or paint a school, or ??? Maybe we drive a van from Knoxville to this destination, do the volunteer work, and tour all the way back.
- Fly to Portland, rent a van, and with advanced reservations at an appropriately located B & B, tour the Oregon coast . . . at our own pace. Explore the dunes, eat fresh sea-food, go to sleep with the sound of the surf in our ears.
- Do the Grand Canyon like every other tourist does, then do the donkey ride down to the Ranch in the canyon for an overnight, with a helicopter ride back to the top.
- Charter a sail boat, with crew, and sail the Caribbean for a few days swimming, sailing, island hopping, etc.
- Go to Vail Colorado, at a time when skiing is NOT in season. See what happens out there when the flowers are in bloom and the mountain trails and valleys can be hiked.
- Go to Costa Rica, group up in fours and with a convoy of 4-wheeled drive SUVs, tour a rain forest, see a volcano and a coffee plantation, swim/snorkel in the Pacific Ocean, (eat black beans like they were going out of style), then come home.
As you can see, the list is limited only by our (and your) imagination. To paraphrase a recent Oldsmobile advertisement--"This is not your typical Seniors' motor coach trip".
We will listen to your input ! ! If you have an interest in this kind of ADVENTURE trip, contact us by clicking on the link which follows to go directly to an E-mail response form. Use the COMMENT section and tell us what interests you from our 'wish list' above; or what kind of ADVENTURE trip you would like to take. Come go ADVENTURING with us.
